Housing Subsidy Program
Specialized accommodation is very costly for lower income seniors. While government funded accessible housing facilities are available, they are limited and often have waiting lists. On the other hand, specialized accommodation in profit-run care homes may be available; however, these are financially out of reach for those of lower income.
Seniors living in specialized housing are often unaware that care costs increase as their health declines. For those with complex health conditions, declining health may signal not only an increase in care costs, but a move to a new facility. This becomes increasingly burdensome for elderly couples experiencing varied health concerns as the availability of suitable housing becomes scarce and its associated costs untenable coupled with the likelihood of separation from spouse, friends, and care community.
MABF's aim is to work with seniors to find suitable choices to fit their financial needs. For some seniors assistance through a subsidy may be available. We would be happy to further discuss our work with you.
Housing Options
This program aims to assist seniors to manage their financial care needs on their own for as long as possible. Assistance of this nature is useful for seniors experiencing a health and financial crisis that requires guidance.
Typically, those requiring this program are senior couples who are at the point in their lives where they can no longer live together because of physical or cognitive challenges. However, they are unable to afford the cost of two separate dwelling places. Due to physical and emotional challenges, uprooting their lives through separation is not a suitable option. For many in this situation having access to financial guidance to assist with budgeting and understanding the cost of housing and care needs enable them to make informed decisions.
Who Benefits?
Various scenarios may exist that warrant assistance. For example, a couple in assisted living may feel pressure to move as one partner is unable to navigate activities of daily living necessitating a transfer to memory care. A single elderly lady in the latter stage of Alzheimer's disease may run out of funds. While they can afford most of the payment, a subsidy toward the cost of assisted living provides needed relief.
Some cases of a crisis nature will require immediate action such as caregiver respite for the hospitalized wife of a man with dementia or rehabilitation placement for a single, elderly man recovering from an accident.. In these situations, the elderly person is often experiencing the effects of multiple physical/psychological conditions, little to no family support, and limited financial funds.
